Geography and geology. Bressay lies due south of Whalsay, west of the Isle of Noss, and north of Mousa.At 11 square miles (28 km 2), it is the fifth largest island in Shetland.The population is around 360 people, concentrated in the middle of the west coast, around Glebe and Fullaburn. The island is made up of Old Red Sandstone with some basaltic intrusions.

One of Scotland’s most spectacular ferry journeys, this venerable service, courtsey of CalMac, chugs out of Oban Bay at 13.40 every day and takes nearly five hours to reach the port of Catlebay.
Ferry crossings to Bressay are currently suspended after the route’s MV Leirna vessel suffered mechanical problems. Council engineers are investigating the engine fault and Whalsay’s MV Hendra will take up service on the Bressay route from around 11am this morning (Wednesday). Bookings on the Whalsay route are currently suspended, with a single vessel service in operation.
